Out-of-plane Seismic Damage and Related Evaluation-Illustrated with A Masonry Historic Building in Taiwan

In Taiwan, serious damage and collapse of brick building suffered from chi-chi earthquake in 1999 are referred to weaker out-of-plane strength. However, the seismic evaluation of brick building is under developing, especially for out-of-plane behavior and failure mechanism. This study mainly focuses on out-of-plane seismic evaluation of masonry historic buildings in Taiwan. Different out-of-plane damage modes and collapse mechanisms were observed- and generalized. In this paper, by assumptions and analytical model methodology in FEM analysis of SAP2000, Dou-shan ancestral hall- a case of masonry historic building in Taiwan had evaluated for the out-of-plane wall before and after strengthening process. The result shows the comparison with original and strengthened wall, and also shows that the improvement of out-of-plane behavior and reduces the deformation by reinforcement adding to out-of-plane walls.
