The Only Representative role is one of the more maligned in the REACH-world, whether by clients who see it as a charge for EU entry, SIEF members who see OR's as barriers to progress or the general perception of the typical OR as being akin to a snake-oil salesman. The role slipped under the radar and was born nameless and without pedigree. Also, most people do not realize it, but the role of OR is not a new one. Under the previous legislation, the role was entitle Sole Representative. It was not a widely used role as most chemicals were not registered and as a result REACH arrived and with it the requirement to have an OR for all non-EU Manufacturers. This article will cast a caustic eye on the service and bring some clarity to the challenges faced by OR's seeking to add value and restore a degree of faith in the role.
