A rapid DSA/TOF method was applied to 10 hand lotions allowing differentiation between hand lotions with and without parabens. The data showed of the 10 hand lotions tested that 6 hand lotions contained parabens which were absent in the other 4 hand lotions. Five samples contained methyl paraben, three samples contained ethyl paraben, six samples contained propyl paraben and four samples were found to contained butyl paraben. The average amount of total parabens in the 6 hand lotions was 0.16 % by weight. The amount by weight of parabens that were detected in the hand lotions compares well to the 0.3 % that the CDC has shown to be typical for personal care products.
