Catharanthus roseus and Rauvolfia serpentina each have approx2000-3000 detected metabolites extracted from the different tissues, of which 2-8percent have been identified and/or annotated. Majority (30-50percent) of the identified metabolites were classified as indole alkaloids signifying the structural diversity of this class of compounds. Indole alkaloids fragment to form ions that indicate the tryptophan-derived indole moiety. The use of multiplexed CID allowed for fast acquisition of fragment information which is useful in identifying functional groups. This is the first instance to establish a database comprising a comprehensive profile of the secondary metabolites of these two plants. The differences in the chemistries of these metabolites in the tissue extracts will facilitate in correlating metabolites to gene expression.
