The formation of radicals in the DART source was inferred by the formation of apparent adducts of the hydroxyl, methyloxy, ethyloxy and amidogen radicals. This data supports the proposed protonated water cluster formation mechanism. Argon does not have enough energy to ionize water, which eliminates the formation of hydroxyl radicals. Proton transfer may dominate in some cases but is not the only reaction that can take place in the sample gap.
