The formation and growth of new particles from gaseous precursors can substantially impact climate, as they may serve as seeds for cloud droplets and thereby influence the fraction of solar radiation reaching Earth's surface. Chemical mechanisms governing the formation and growth of new particles are not well known. Sulfuric acid and bases (ammonia, amines) are critical to promoting nucleation and growth of small clusters but exactly how they incorporate into growing clusters is not fully understood. This work: Infer growth energetics from fragmentation energetics by assuming growth is the reverse of fragmentation.
