1. Feasibility of Direct EI was demons trated as a food safety tool for detection and identification of environmental contaminants. (1) Good method performance was achieved over multiple days; (2) Method performance was similar in two different laboratories (one in Europe and one in the US); (3) Set-up of a new instrument in the US lab was straightforward; (4) Large run sets (in excess of 14 hrs) were achieved. 2. Advantages of Direct EI for LCMS. (1) More facile unknown identification due to the characteristic EI fragmentation and existence of large, commercial mass spectral databases; (2) Simplicity of the interface offers facile maintenance; (3) The EI source is rugged and is less influenced by matrix; (4) Low cost of entry compared to high resolution LCMS instrumentation.
