1. Ciliary membrane biotinylation/streptavidin affinity purification has enabled detection of approximately 189 putative ciliary membrane component proteins. 2. In addition to previously reported ciliary membrane proteins, a number of additional proteins which have not been previously reported to be components of the ciliary membrane were identified in this study. 3. A number of uncharacterized proteins have been identified as putative ciliary membrane proteins. 4. Additional studies are underway to optimize ciliary membrane biotinylation procedures to provide more comprehensive detection of ciliary membrane components. Because the ciliary membrane surfaces are known to be covered with tethered mucins and other glycoproteins, enzymatic or chemical removal of these moieties may be necessary to enable more complete biotinylation of surface ciliary membrane proteins.
