In this study, we found that the types of ions detected by ESA-Py/MS were nearly identical with those obtained by methanol extraction following by ESI/MS analysis of crude oils. The results suggest that the polar components are rapidly characterized by ESA-Py/MS without any sample pretreatment, and the interference of hydrocarbon components was greatly neglected. In additon, with the assistance of statistical analysis, the crude oils were well classified based on the obtained mass spectra, which show a strong correlation with their origins. As a result, combining ESA-Py/MS with a multivariate statistical method appears as a efficient method to distinguish the differences of samples. This also provide an alternative approach for identifying target analytes in petroleomics applications.
