In our work, we used a conventional analytical technique (MALDI identifications of organisms) in order to differentiate two strains of E. coli. Using this method, the two strains could not be differentiated given the actual scoring scheme. In order to distinguish these strains, it was necessary to differentiate the MALDI mass spectra of these two organisms. Our method allowed us to identify biomarkers specific to one strain of ESBL-producing E. coli. These biomarkers were amino acid sequences of periplasmic acid shock proteins. Future work will consist of explaining the presence of this protein in the ESBL-producing E. coli sample as well as investigating if such methods can be used for different organisms.
