APPI and ASAP were successfully used with Xevo-TQD tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry for polymer, pre-polymer and polymer additive analyses. We were able to demonstrate the utility of APPI and ASAP as complementary alternative ionisation techniques for mass spectrometric analysis in the polymer industry. Individual compounds, and bulk materials, with diverse physicochemical properties were easily ionised and detected. Bulk materials were characterised, including molecular weight distributions, and unique 'finger print' features were easily identified. Similar materials from different suppliers were analysed and the ASAP technique proved suitable for detecting subtle manufacturing variations.
