Field test evaluation of a walkthrough portal detector of improvised explosive devices at a train station

We developed a high-throughput vapor-sampling walkthrough portal with a wire linear ion-trap mass spectrometer (wire LIT) to detect IEDs. We successfully detected TATP within 3 seconds with the new laminar flow sampling portal. We measured the false-positive rate with over 15,000 volunteer passengers in an airport and train station in Japan. The field tests demonstrated that multiple-marker detection was effective for a low false-positive rate of less than 0.1percent.
