This study confirmed HBQs as DBPs in all nine plants, where DCBQ and DBBQ are detected with high frequencies (100 and 72percent) and in concentrations up to 274.5 and 37.9 ng/L, respectively. DCBQ and DBBQ are potentially useful as surrogates for population exposure and health risk assessment. DCBQ formation is associated with chlorination, whereas DBBQ formation is associated with ozonation and the content of bromide in the raw water. The potential toxicity of HBQs and their demonstrated occurrence in treated water from full scale water treatment plants warrants further investigation of this newly discovered class of DBPs.
