Cuticular waxes of individual flowers of Ler wild type and cer1 mutant Arabidopsis at different developmental stages were profiled using GC-MS and LDI-MS. The cuticular waxes of cer1 mutant are different from those of wild type in total wax load, amounts of individual wax metabolites. The comparisons between GC-MS and LDI-MS results indicate that the two methods generate data that are in good agreement in general. The minor differences, especially in some fatty acids, needs to be further studied. High resolution mass spectrometric data is being acquired with MALDI-LTQ-Orbitrap to identify the metabolite assignments.
