Mass Spectrometry Guided Surgery by Direct Coupling of Electrosurgical Methods with On-line Mass Spectrometric Analysis

Mass spectrometric analysis of ions formed on surgical intervention (electro- and laser surgery) yields tissue specific phospholipid fingerprint. Real-time analysis of mass spectrometric data provides in-situ histological type of information for the surgeon. Both infiltrations of primary malignant tumors and proximal metastases can potentially be identified using intraoperative REIMS method.
