摘要

Proper organization and differentiation of the anterior segment tissues in the eye is crucial in attaining normal visual function. The neural crest-derived periocular mesenchyme (POM) cells contribute significantly to the formation of the anterior segment. The forkhead/ winged-helix transcription factor, Foxcl, is expressed in POM cells, and its proper expression is critical for normal embryonic development. Mutations in the gene encoding the transcription factor form the basis of malformations in anterior segment development.
