Fetlock pain, damage and catastrophic fracture are problems in horses doing various sports. It is important to recognise these problems, monitor response to management and make decisions about a logical stage to return to training. For racehorses, condylar fractures and proximal phalanx fractures are the most likely catastrophic fatal limb fractures (Parkin ef al. 2004). There appears to be a similar pattern in endurance horses. Screening for detection of warning signs (pre-existing pathology) couldprevent catastrophic fractures, whether or not this is associated with overt fetlock pain (Parkin et al. 2005).
