In-furnace radiative behaviors of burning single fuel particles were monitored in air as well as in a simulated oxy-fuel condition, i.e., in surrounding gases consisting of 30% O_2 blended with 70% CO_2. Four pulverized fuels were burned, a bituminous coal, a lignite coal, and two biomasses. Particle sizes were in the nominal range of 75-90 μm and combustion took place in a transparent drop-tube furnace, electrically-heated to a wall temperature of 1400 K. The combustion of individual particles was observed with three-color pyrometry and high-speed high-resolution cinematography to record/deduce their monochromatic radiative intensity, their temperature and their burnout time histories. Results showed that the radiation from single bituminous coal particles burning in air or in a simulated oxy-combustion condition is higher than that from lignite particles which, in turn, is much higher than that from burning single biomass particles.
