The accuracy of cytology compared to histopathology is tissue dependant. The aim of this prospective study was to determine the accuracy of fine needle aspirate (FNA) and impression smear cytology as compared with histopathology in the diagnoses of oral masses from dogs.Methods: FNA, impression smear and histopathologic samples were obtained from 68 canine oral masses. One clinical pathologist reviewed the cytologic samples and 1 histopathologist reviewed the tissue samples. Sensitivity and specificity of cytology werecalculated at three levels using histopathology as the gold standard: inflammation vs. neoplasia, neoplastic cell type (mesenchymal, melanocytic, round, or epithelial) and specific type of tumor.
