Development of an Acoustic Sensor for On-Line Gas Temperature Measurement in Gasifiers

The objective of this project is to develop acoustic pyrometer technology for use inside a coal gasifier. A variety of sound generation and coupling approaches suitable for use with a high pressure process have been examined and a novel sound generation approach has been conceived and tested. Impacts of gas composition variability, particle loading in the gas and slagging have been evaluated. A series of prototype sub-assemblies have been fabricated and tested to allow selection of the best approaches, and a field prototype sensor has been designed, fabricated and tested. Field testing at the Wabash River gasifier facility is scheduled to commence in the summer of 2005. This paper reports on the theory and practical considerations affecting acoustic pyrometry in gasifiers, results obtained in a high pressure test facility, plans for field testing, and the prospects for reliable gas temperature measurement inside gasifiers using acoustic pyrometry.
