In the paper, the emulsification mechanism of coal tar and the influence of various factors on the stability of coal tar emulsion were studied thoroughly. Experimental results demonstrated that, coal tar and ammonia liquor can form very stable W/O emulsion with carbonic powder (coke powder + coal powder) as emulsifier; and the stability of coal tar emulsion principally depends on dosage and granularity of emulsifier as well as proportion of coal powder in emulsifier. On the basis of study on emulsification mechanism, the precaution for preventing coal tar from emulsification was put forward. Finally, that chemical demulsifier, ultrasonic field and high-voltage electric field were used in demulsification and dewater of coal tar emulsions were investigated. It was found that chemical demulsifier and ultrasonic field, especially combination of the both, can speed up demulsification and dewater of coal tar emulsions, but high-voltage electric field cannot be used in demulsification and dewater of coal tar emulsions.
