Hydrologists and ground water engineers have been utilizing borehole geophysical logs in new multiuser and large ground water wells for the last 40-50 years. Many state agencies have mandated a basic logging suite on specific water wells as part of the well permit requirements since the 1980s. The primary logging suite has been of natural gamma, spontaneous potential (SP), shallow and deep resistivity logs (E-Logs), optionally caliper and occasionally porosity logs including sonic, G-G density and neutron. The primary application has been qualitative to determine screen location (determine lithology and identify the location of the aquifers and confining layers) and well diameter to aid in well construction.
