Possible Upgrade of an Existing Tandem Accelerator Facility to an ISOL Facility for Neutron-Rich Rare Isotope Beams

The feasibility and utility of a Helium multi-jet system to transport fission fragments vertically up to an ionsource 50 m above ground level is explored. This idea opens up the possibility of using the existing 15-UD tandem and SClinac accelerator system at Inter University Accelerator Center (IUAC) as a post accelerator for rare isotope beams (RIBs).This could considerably speed up the upgrade of the facility to a RIB facility since the driver accelerator (e.g. a 50 MeVelectron accelerator) can be purchased. We find that such a facility will be competitive for refractory neutron-rich isotopesand can later be combined with a positive ion injector to produce a large number of beam species with higher intensities.
