In this paper, a coupled system dynamic and water quality model (SD-WQM)was developed to simulate human-nature-compound water system in a rapidlyurbanization catchment. The SD model was applied to describe the interactionsbetween socio-economic, water resources, and wastewater system and to predict thepopulation and economic growth, water consumption and water pollutant loads ineach sub-catchment; the WQM was applied to describe the pollutant transport andtransformation processes and to predict the water quality in a river system. The twomodels were coupled by distributing the pollutant loads in each sub-catchment to theoutlets or confluents along the river. An application to Shenzhen river catchmentindicated that SD-WQM is a flexible and consistent method to evaluate the effectsintegrated measures, which include not only engineering measures but also somesocio-economic policies, to achieve resource balance and water quality improvementin a rapid urbanization area.
