Thermochemical cycles have recently received a great deal of attention for efficient production of hydrogen on large scale. The Hybrid-Sulfur (HyS) process is a leading candidate among all hybrid thermochemical cycles. The grand challenge in the Hybrid-Sulfur (HyS) process is the lack of appropriate proton exchange membrane (PEM). The most widely used commercial membranes for PEM are Nation and sulfonated poly-etherketones (SPEKs) (Fumatech). These membranes show good proton conductivity, but Nation has high sulfur dioxide cross-over across the membrane while SPEK's degrades quickly in high sulfuric acid concentrations. Therefore, a novel membrane with low sulfur dioxide transport and chemical stability against H2SO4 is required for efficient production of hydrogen in HyS process.
