Loop technique for mitral valve repair

Since October 2005, we have adopted loop technique in consecutive 126 cases for mitral valve repair, including 65 posterior, 25 anterior, and 36 bi-leaflet cases. In these series, the number of artificial (Gore-tex) chordae (loops) used ranged from one to ten. As compared to resection and suture technique, annuloplasty rings used in loop technique were larger, and postoperative echocardiography showed more physiological leaflet motion. Moreover, intra-operative revision of repair could be done more easily because native leaflet tissues were left intact. Loop technique could be done through both minimally invasive and conventional approach to the mitral valve, and simplified chordal replacement with the former.
