The orientations of 129 grains in a 4 x 4 mm surface embedded in an aluminium polycrystal were measured by high-resolution EBSD at 0, 25 % and 40 % hot plane strain compression. Statistically-sound grain rotations and in-grain disorientations were obtained. Individual grain rotations were compared to predictions from the Taylor model. A first-order agreement was found for the rotation directions, but less agreement was found for the rotation amplitudes. Large in-grain orientation spreads, of up to 20°, were measured and were found not to be correlated with the average grain rotations. 10 % of the grains split up during deformation.
