In the 1980s a series of papers published over a v, years revealed the basic transduction casde in vertebrate olfactory receptor neurons. plying the still relatively new techniques of ymerase chain reaction and patch clamp ccording and taking the lead from Doron ncet's suggestion that it was likely that all actory sensory neurons (OSNs) used the me common transduction mechanism (as was own to be the case in photoreceptors), sev-al laboratories contributed to the discovery a transduction cascade remarkably similar that in vertebrate rods and cones. It turned it to be a classical G protein, cyclic nucleotide neme, with cAMP directly gating a cation' ective ion channel, also homologous to the MP-gated channel found in photoreceptors.
