Legacy ring based networks have been deployed in conjunction with SONET/SDH technology to provide survivability to transport networks. Service recovery within 50ms after fault detection can be achieved. With the advent of optical transport networks provided with GMPLS control plane, efficient resilience mechanism have to be investigated to provide recovery times equivalent to those granted by SONET/SDH networks. In this paper a Reconfigurable Optical Add and Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) design to support dedicated section protection (OMS-DPRing) scheme is described. Using these new ROADMs in conjunction with proposed extensions to GMPLS Link Management Protocol (LMP) will allow achieve recovery times equivalent to those granted by SONET/SDH architectures.
