It has been well documented that organizational effects occur in fish after exposure to estrogenic chemicals, including sex-reversal, decrease in gonad development, and other morphological changes. However, activational effects such as changes in hormone dependent protein levels and/or gene expression after exposure to these chemicals have just recently been studied. These effects are proving to be successful biomarkers, because their levels are proportional to estrogenic chemical concentrations in exposure water and can be quantitatively measured.
