This work is part of a Rowan University Engineering Clinic. The Engineering Clinic is the hallmark of the Rowan engineering curriculum. Students are required to take Engineering Clinics every semester beginning in their freshman year. Junior/Senior level Engineering Clinics are project based courses, usually in collaboration with an industrial partner. Students solve industrially relevant problems benefiting the industrial partner while learning new technologies and applying what is learned in the classroom (Sukumaran et al., 2006). For this project, the partner was La Universidad Catolica del Norte Sede Coquimbo in Coquimbo, Chile. This partnership is the beginning of an international collaboration consistent with the Rowan University mission. Theoverall goal of this collaboration is to apply chemical engineering principles to optimize aquaculture processes. The specific goal of this project is to design a monitoring and control system to optimize the growth and development of abalone aquaculture operations in Caldera, Chile.
