The Ruth Burnett Sport Fish Hatchery (RBSFH) will be constructed during 2008-9 in Fairbanks, Alaska, to sustain stocked sport fisheries within Interior Alaska. Participation in sport fisheries maintained with propagated fish contributes significantlyto Alaska's economy; the average contribution is estimated to be $34.1 million annually (King, 2004). Within Interior Alaska, stocked sport fisheries offer recreational angling opportunities that would otherwise be nonexistent. Maintaining these fisheries with the fishery management challenges of relatively short growth seasons and the importance of controlled release times and sizes of fish accentuate the need for a new regional fish hatchery within Alaska's Interior. Funding was secured to locate theRBSFH in Fairbanks because it is a regional population and commerce hub in Alaska's Interior and is centrally located to most stocked roadside lakes in the Interior supporting sport fisheries. While relatively new to Alaskan sport fish propagation, large-scale recirculating and partial reuse rearing systems for cold-water salmonid aquaculture will be utilized to produce fish. Overall, approximately 45,000 kg (or nearly 1 million fish) from six fish species native to Alaska will be produced annually at the RBSFH.
