The main aim of this paper is to address the benefits and hindrances of using RAS's in determining the optimal grow-out culture conditions for marine finfish. The paper will discuss the pros and cons of using RAS's when designing such experiments as well as providing possible solutions using a real-case situation (Collett, 2008a). The findings will therefore hopefully assist other scientists or farmers who intend investigating new candidate aquaculture species in RAS's. Before any species is deemed suitable for commercial production a number of simple experiments should be run to assess and determine the culture potential of the species. Typically, these experiments would aim to determine the optimal temperature, salinity, light intensity, photoperiod, feeding frequency and stocking density for growth, survival and FCR.
