SR 188 Resort Road to Devore Wash Intermediate BMPs on highway projects

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) improved and expanded SR188 from the City of Globe to Roosevelt Lake, a distance of about 30 miles. This project included 8 miles of new highway in mountainous terrain with 6 new bridges, 70 pipes and box culverts, an animal crossing, transplanting of 1000 cacti and 2 million yards of excavation costing $30 million. This case study reviews the use and application of BMPs but also explores the concept of intermediate BMPs, filling a gap between temporary BMPs and permanent erosion control measures.
