Welcome to our session on geoengineering. Today we're going to revisit a topic that has been previously discussed at Erice to a considerable extent. While many of the plenary treatments of the subject have explored the concept in some detail, what you may not know is that all participants of a previous theoretical workshop on climate at Erice made a definitive statement on the subject. All participants in the workshop unanimously and emphatically took the position that geoengineering was an extraordinarily dangerous undertaking. Of course we do not mean geoengineering in the sense of local engineering projects per se,which surely are geoengineering in some scale, we are speaking instead here of grand global projects meant to deal with current concerns and conceptions about climate change.
