Pile load tests are regularly used to verify pile capacities. Sometimes, they are used to optimize pile designs. This paper presents a case study based on a real project, in which the information obtained from load tests during construction was used to shorten the design pile lengths without a formal decision analysis. In this study, a simple probabilistic model was used to assess the probabilities of failure based on design information. The Bayesian approach was used to update the probabilities given the additional information from load tests. These probabilities were then used in a formal decision analysis to determine the optimal pile lengths based on design information and based on the additional information from load tests. The optimal pile lengths are different from those implemented in the project without a formal decision analysis. The value of the formal decision analysis is illustrated by its ability to optimize the pile length in a transparent and defendable way.
