New sustainable processes with microwave application performed by the author’s research groupare reviewed in the present study. Microwave treatments were applied to immobilization of transuranicincinerator ash, Fe and P recovery from steelmaking slags and Mg gas production from waste MgO-Crefractory materials. Although some waste materials could be easily heated by 2.45GHz microwaveirradiation, the effect of additives was considerably large. Furthermore, the addition of graphite also causedcarbothermic reduction of FetO, P_2O_5 and MgO, which enabled the recovery of Fe, P and Mg from thewaste slags and refractories generated in the steelmaking processes.
