Performing a bone marrow aspirate does not have to be just the responsibility of the veterinarian. Certified veterinary technicians can be trained to do this procedure and in turn make themselves more valuable team members. Bone marrow aspirates can be done for various reasons. Some of those reasons include a nonregenerative anemia, any combination of peripheral cytopenias that may include a persistent or unexplained neutropenia, unexplained thrombocytopenia, or pancytopenia. Dysplastic changes, anypersistent leukocytosis or severe thrombocytosis can also necessitate a bone marrow aspirate. Occasionally there may be immature hematopoietic cells in the peripheral circulation. A patient may also present with a lytic bone lesion, thus a cortical bonebiopsy would be indicated in those cases.
