Silage maize production is assumed to negatively affect soil C content. This study quantified the impact of hybrid/sampling date on the above- and belowground dry matter and C accumulation, carbon input and root turnover during the growing season. Hybrid/harvest date had no impact on gross root biomass and C input, which amounted to 1.2 Mg C ha~(-1). Root turnover was estimated at 50% until harvest. In contrast to the roots, the stubble biomass increased when harvest was delayed, resulting in highertotal C input for later harvests.
