The monitoring of swine for the presence of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus (PRRSv) has become a key component of many swine herd health programs. Key decisions regarding the movement of pigs and personnel, as well as how PRRS control methods will be implemented, are often based on the results of this surveillance. Swine producers and veterinarians that implement routine herd monitoring are often looking for alternative methods that allow for a more convenient and less expensive way to sample animals without giving up accuracy that current serum based diagnostics provide.
