It is widely accepted that infectious diseases are a limiting factor for the modern swine industry. Some bacterial diseases can be controlled by treatment with antibiotics, but choosing the most appropriate antibiotic is not always simple. Swine practitioners often need to make therapeutic decisions without a definitive diagnosis and even without the results of studies of in vitro sensitivity. Therefore it is especially important to treat animals with an antibiotic with a wide spectrum of activity, rapid tissue distribution, and with minimal likelihood of resistance.
