A new class of brominated polymeric flame retardants has been developed with good thermal stability and a high degree of flame retardant activity for selected polymers such as polystyrene. These flame retardants also give an improved environmental profile necessary to meet regulatory guidelines for use in various polymers. An overview of these new polymeric flame retardants will be presented along with composition and characterization information. Preliminary performance data for polystyrene-flame retardant blends will also be discussed.
