The fire resistance and mechanical properties of recycled PolyEthylene Terephthalate (PET) were improved by incorporation of submicronic kaolin in association with TriPhenylPhosphite (TPP). The modification of kaolin by TPP was carried out by grafting of TPP onto kaolin platelets without intercalation. The use of organomodified kaolin leads to an increase of flexural rigidity and to an improvement of reaction to fire through the formation of a cohesive homogeneous charred layer. The best results are obtained by combining modified kaolin with pure TPP at 9 w% loading. The results were attributed to the grafted TPP that favors a good dispersion of mineral particles in the polymer matrix and enhances charring effect during combustion.
