OMV is currently operating in four refineries in Austria, Germany and Romania and holds a 45% stake in another refinery in Germany. Three of these refineries are petrochemistry-integrated by means of a steam cracker. OMV also holds a 35% stake in BOREALIS which runs two of its sites in close connection with two of OMV's refineries. At OMV's refinery in Burghausen/Germany a major expansion of its petrochemical plants has been conducted and the new/revamped complex has been started up end of 2007. After a brief introduction to OMV's refining landscape, OMV's view on today's options for refining-development in Europe will be given. The derived development-strategy of OMV-Refining emphasizing petrochemical expansion will be discussed. The integration of a major and complex expansion within an existing refinery site is a challenging effort. The pathway of development (Front End Loading) of this expansion based on OMV's FEL-principals is presented. Finally the results of FEL as well as of the expansion-project are shown.
