Today's vehicles are not stand-alone programs any more, it is rather a development of an architecture for a large variety of vehicles, prior to or in parallel with the first vehicle off this architecture. Out of this large variety of programs and the variants within each program, CAE Modelling must pick the correct data to deliver the correct CAE models to the simulation groups. This can only be performed with the capabilities of modern PDM systems that allow the filtering of all data stored in a global vehicle database in such a way that it shows those vehicle configurations which are tracked as reporting models throughout the entire development process. Being responsible for the development of GM's global mid-size vehicle architecture with all its bandwidth, GME Engineering has to deliver not only the vehicle data in the PDM system but also the CAE models of the architecture in order to avoid multiple modelling of the same geometry. As the programs follow the timing requirements of the markets they do not line up in such a way that this CAE model delivery needs to be planned, managed, communicated and documented.
