A Real-time Interactive Editor for 3D Image Registration

Creating deformations between 3D volumes has received attention in areas such as animation, fluid dynamics, and medical imaging. Volume data often represents some anatomical structure or fluid which moves in a smooth, continuous manner. Particularly in the medical imaging community, there have been a number of attempts to automatically compute these smooth deformations between successive volume data sets, however due to the considerable amount of imaging artifacts, manual deformation methods are often required. There have been several human-assisted systems that facilitate manual deformation of volumetric data, however, they either do not facilitate real-time interaction from a user, or are too cumbersome for substantially large data sets. We present an interactive too! for creating and validating high-quality point-based and coordinate frame-based deformations. At its core, there is a visualization framework interactively renders deformed volumes and visually assesses the quality of deformations as volumes are manipulated.
