Internal mechanical stressors occur as a consequence of performing physical activity. These stressors, which manifest within the body, are very dynamic. They are realized within muscles, tendons, and ligaments as they contract or stretch during movement or within joints that undergo compression, tension or shear while supporting body weight. These stresses vary as a function of leverages and the weight of body parts or objects moved. An important thing to remember about internal mechanical stresses is that they cannot be directly measured. Though the intensity of stress that the body receives may be inferred by indirect means such as biomechanical modeling or calculations.
