Wetting and Interfacial Interactions in Boronized and Nitrocarburized Iron/Glass Systems

Iron based materials in contact with molten glass have wide application areas. The iron in contact with molten glass is wetted by the glass. Contact angle known as wetting angle occurs between the glass and the metal surface during the wetting. The wetting angle is one of the indications for the interaction between the metal surface and the glass. In the present work, interactions between molten glass and different thermochemically treated cast iron, i.e. non-treated, boronized and nitrocarburized cast iron were investigated. It was found that chemical reactions occurred between soda-lime glass and iron. It was observed that iron diffusion occurred at the glass-metal interface depending on time in Ar atmosphere. Interactions and reactions between iron and molten glass were found to be effected by atmosphere and ambient temperature. More wetting and rapid spreading were seen to occur in an oxidizing atmosphere. Reduction and oxidation reactions at the glass-metal interface gave rise to gasification and bubbling. Although the glass wetted the boronized cast iron surface in the argon atmosphere, reactions between iron and molten glass, which leads to gasification and the bubbling, were not observed to occur.
