Ceramic Matrix Composites Status of Materials and Applications in CVITechnology

Key properties of CVI derived ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) presently available and manufactured under industrial conditions will be presented. All manufacturing processes, among others liquid silicon, liquid polymer and chemical vapour infiltration of fabric preforms, use net shape techniques for the desired components. The material properties are highlighted by high fracture toughness and elongation capabilities as well as excellent thermal shock and tribological behaviour. Some differences of different types of CMCs will be discussed. Application development has been and still is very active for space re-entry vehicles. Components loaded with temperatures up to 1600°C are nose caps, wing edges and control flaps. Special developments for oxidation protection systems, joining and design tools have been necessary in this field. Other developments have succeeded, for example in ceramic brake disks and journal bearing components. A selection of some of the still manifold development ideas and results together with considerations about further trends will summarize the paper.
