摘要

This presentation summarizes the results of several sustainability initiatives undertaken by NASA as part of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. These initiatives support the achievement of the goals identified in Executive Order 13423 and focus on improving the sustainability of two large groundwater treatment systems. The first system is currently in the design and construction phase and is a 7,000 gallon per minute (gpm) drinking water treatment system designed to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and perchlorate from groundwater extracted from four production wells. The second system has been operating since 2005 and is a 300 gpm system designed to remove VOCs and perchlorate from groundwater in the chemical source area. For both systems, an environmental footprint evaluation was performed to establish the baseline conditions for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, energy usage, air emissions, and water usage. Sustainable practices were then evaluated and recommended in the areas of energy (both energy efficiency and renewable energy), water efficiency (wastewater minimization), and green construction/operations (environmentally preferable materials, recycling, etc.). NASA also incorporated some innovative and successful contractor incentives into the construction and operation contract to encourage the identification and implementation of sustainable initiatives.
